Artdomain has a blog….so what?
Hello world…..? Is there anyone there…..? Well I sure hope so, ’cause Artdomain has officially started it’s blog and I don’t want to be speaking to Mr/Mrs/Ms No-one…
I’m so excited. I’ve read so much about how blogging is good for artists and how google loves blogs because of all the new content posted regularly…so to finally take the plunge is a great step.
What do I hope to achieve from the Artdomain blog? Well first and foremost I want to explore how artists can promote and market their art effectively to create new sales opportunities for their work.
I recently posted a question on Facebook asking if Facebook helped artists to sell their artwork. I had a good response however one artist seemed a bit annoyed at me even bringing up the words “sell” and “art” in the same sentence, saying artists should create art for arts sake. Now I’m all for the creative spirit leading the artist when producing artwork, but once finished, unless the artists wants to surround themselves with piles of their unsold artworks, the artist must learn selling and marketing as a skill to compliment their artistic side. And it is a skill that needs to be learnt, and practised and honed if an artist wants to successfully practise their art full time as their career.
I think the whole issue of selling + art being seen as so incompatible to artists stems from art schools…I know from personal experience that there was very little sales and marketing training on art courses (is it different now ? - leave comments). You were just suppose to leave after 4 years study, get a studio and ‘be recognised’ by a gallery, then be mega successful from thereon….eh no, didn’t happen, what then? Well if artists can learn the skills to successfully market and sell their art, there can be a chance to create that elusive professional art career.
So that’s going to be the theme of this blog…Art and Art Marketing Musings. I’ve got a lot to say :-) so check back often - I’ll put up a subscribe option shortly so, if you’d like to hear what I’m saying, you can get the blog posts to your email or RSS (still don’t understand that one, but soon will!) Comment - Done ! you can subscride by email or RSS at the top right of page.
Anyway have a nice Friday, and take care.
